Gym, Art, Choir, Band, and Orchestra Should Stay in School
Annalise B
Physical education, art, choir, band, and orchestra are all an important part of an average middle school-ers life. Most middle school students come to school looking forward to going to their electives. If kids didn’t have them to look forward to, what would their day be like? If we didn’t have electives all the kids in the school would mope around like Eeyore.
First of all, physical education (P.E. or gym) gives kids a chance to get all their energy out. If students don’t have gym they will all be restless and rowdy during their classes, this will probably make most teachers mad, you don’t want to put them through that do you? I think the teachers put up with too much already; we don’t need to add another thing to their plate. Gym is also a time for kids to be loud. If they don’t have a chance during the day to be loud and run around they will all a have as much energy as a little kid on a sugar high. Also, not as many kids will get in trouble because they won’t have as much energy to be mean and bully with.
Besides gym, art is another elective budget cuts might force us to cut. Art is a place where students can get their creative juices flowing. If their creative mind is activated it could also help them in language arts if they have to write a paper because, they will have an easier time using creative writing. Another reason why we need art is, it gives kids a chance to use different tools than a pencil all day. The last reasons is, the student’s art could get hung up on the wall and give the kid a sense of accomplishment.
In addition to art and gym, choir is another elective on the chopping block. Choir is the only time during the day, at school that students are able to sing and not get in trouble for it. Singing is a great way to let all your feelings pour from your mouth like a waterfall of words. Some kids prefer choir to every other elective because it is the only time during the day when the can express themselves and not get made fun of.
Finally, band and orchestra are some more topics on the burner of life. Instrumental music is a fantastic way to show of your musical skills, weather it is through stings or band instrument. If kids aren’t athletically inclined, creative, or great at singing, they can fall back on band or orchestra. Some kids might even say that playing and instrument makes them feel like a butterfly gently gliding in the wind. I have had a first hand experience of band, some kids really love it. Let me tell you, sitting and playing an instrument does feel pretty darn good.
Clearly, cutting P.E., art, choir, band, and orchestra would not be ideal to the typical middle student’s life. Students need to have a time during the day when they can express themselves, and let all their stress roll of them, weather its through running, being creative, singing, or playing an instrument.
